We were a shambles - Stewart
05 January 2007
The former Manchester United player was part of a Hearts midfield which was overrun during an opening period in which Hibs, inspired by Guillaume Beuzelin and Steven Fletcher, took the lead with a Christophe Berra own goal.
He explained: "We allowed them far too much time on the ball in the first half, although that was what we were instructed to do, and fortunately at half-time Stevie Frail had a few words with the boys and we had a clearer idea of the fact we needed to confront them."
Explaining the half-time switch, he added: "Originally, it was a case of sitting towards the halfway line and then when they came to within 10 or 15 yards of the halfway line to press them.
"But unfortunately it descended into a bit of a shambles in the first half. There were a few of us that could see we needed to get up the park and thankfully at half-time we were able to address that.
"Sitting off Beuzelin meant he was allowed to get the ball and then he was sliding it into Fletcher and it was causing all sorts of problems. A guy with a white stick could have seen that.
"Thankfully at half-time we were able to turn that round and get the team up the park and we started to win a few balls in their half and break on them.
"In the second half we had a few chances where we could have stolen the game. But given the fact we were so shambolic in the first half it was probably a fair result."
In contrast, Hibs manager John Collins was thrilled with the way his side had dominated the first half before being pegged back by Christian Nade's equaliser.
He said: "The first-half performance was absolutely magnificent, you would not have believed it was a derby the way we controlled and passed the ball with great composure. We probably deserved more than one goal."
