Weather saves faltering India

England were foiled by the weather as a dramatic first Test at Lord's was drawn with India hanging on with nine wickets down.

Bad light and rain intervened in the opening match of the npower series, moments before the scheduled tea interval, with Michael Vaughan's men just one wicket short of victory.

India began the final day on 137 for three, chasing an imposing 380, and lost two wickets in the first hour.

But a stand of 86 between Mahendra Dhoni and VVS Laxman spanning 28 overs held up the race against the rain.

Although Laxman's dismissal sparked a spell of four wickets for 32 runs, wicketkeeper Dhoni proved immovable, finishing on 76 not out, alongside number 11 Shantha Sreesanth.

Frustratingly England had used only 55 of the scheduled 98 overs allocated for the final day and now head to Trent Bridge for Friday's second Test with the campaign level.
