Wednesday reveal takeover interest
29 January 2008
Wednesday, facing a fight to avoid relegation back to League One, have been linked with several potential takeovers.
A club statement read: "The board of Sheffield Wednesday has received an indicative non-binding expression of interest which may or may not lead to an offer being made for some or all of the shares in the Company."
On Thursday, fans' group Wednesdayite revealed a second consortium could be ready to launch a takeover bid at Hillsborough.
Wednesdayite chairman Darryl Keys confirmed earlier this week a consortium headed by Lancashire businessman Geoff Sheard was poised to make a written offer for the fans' group's shares.
This would lead to a buyout of shares owned by club directors past and present, but a rival consortium has also been in talks with Wednesdayite.
A Wednesdayite statement read: "The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Society have been approached by two different parties about the processes surrounding our shares.
"Discussions with both of these parties have been friendly, cordial, professional and constructive. We are keen to help them as much as we are able, in order for them to make formal bids.
"We are not favouring any party - and can only consider selling our shares, if that is any particular investor's requirement, only if and when we receive a written offer.
"No amount of verbal comfort about various issues - while nice - is a substitute for what is contained within a written offer."
