Weir claims second gold

Wheelchair racer David Weir won his and Great Britain's second athletics gold of the Paralympic Games with a stunning victory in the men's T54 1,500 metres in Beijing.

The 29-year-old from Wallington, Surrey, won 800m gold on Saturday - ending a 12-year wait for Paralympic glory after Australia's Kurt Fearnley withdrew a protest 12 hours after the final - and added his second title just three days later.

As with the 800m, Weir's tactics worked to perfection as he led from the front.

Weir, who won 400m silver and 5,000 bronze, was clear alongside Prawat Wahoram at the bell and the duo forged ahead.

The result came down to a home-straight sprint and the Briton had too much power as he outpaced the Thai 5,000m champion to win in three minutes 10.34 seconds.

Weir believes the 1,500m is the main event for middle-distance and distance racers, which makes the victory even sweeter.

"I don't know what to say, I'm just overwhelmed," said Weir. "Everyone wants to win the 1,500 as it's usually a demonstration race at Olympics or world championships.

"At the Paralympics you see how many wheelchair racers started the 1,500 - 36 or 38 athletes, five heats, that's incredible.

"And I've just come out top."

Weir could add to his haul in the final event of the Games, the marathon.
