Weir tops leaderboard

Mike Weir opened up a one-shot lead after the second round of the PGA Tour's season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship.

The Canadian carded a six-under-par 67 and is at eight under par at the halfway stage.

Canadian Stephen Ames (67) and Jonathan Byrd (69) are tied for second at seven under.

Weir, the 2003 US Masters champion, said afterwards: "It was easier out there with the wind not as strong. I'm pretty happy."

Brandt Snedeker (69) and Nick Watney (72), the overnight leader, are one shot further back.
