Weir warns against complacency

Scotland defender David Weir insists all the good work done so far in their Euro 2008 qualification campaign will count for nothing if they do not finish off the job by making next summer's finals.

After nine matches Alex McLeish's side are top of Group B one point ahead of Italy and two ahead of France whom, remarkably, they have beaten home and away.

"We will have failed by not qualifying. That's why we are in the group, to reach the finals," said Weir. "So of course we will be failures if we don't qualify, especially having got 21 points."

He added: "To be honest, I would rather be France and have a difficult campaign and probably qualify than be Scotland doing well and not qualifying.

"We have to get to these tournaments because if not it gets harder and harder the way the seedings system works.

"We have hung in there, we now have a realistic chance and have to make the most of it.

"You do not get that many opportunities and now we are effectively in a three-game group.

"Qualification is the be-all and end-all: it doesn't mean as much if we don't qualify.

"That's the bottom line and it would be a shame to throw it away at the end."
