Wells wants to emulate Wales

England's forwards coach John Wells has taken inspiration from the way Wales transformed their fortunes with a stunning win at Twickenham last season and now he wants to turn the tables.

Wales opened their RBS 6 Nations campaign at Twickenham last February having failed to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup and with a new coaching team in place. England stormed into a 16-6 lead at half-time but Mike Phillips inspired a dramatic late comeback.

"You should not underestimate how much of a difference a good win will make to this group of people," said Wells.

Wells believes England are in a similar position heading into Saturday's trip to the Millennium Stadium - just one "substantial victory" away from turning things around.

He added: "It was not so long ago that everybody was slating the Welsh but over the last year they have developed shape, pattern and play.

"For much of the match at Twickenham last year they were hanging in - and not by playing good rugby, just by hanging in.

"Whatever happened in the last 20 minutes, it was not by playing the kind of rugby they played last week.

"Within a short period of time - but a lot of Test matches together - they have developed some style and shape.

"The reason we can be positive is that if we are given time, we will develop."
