Westwood in contention

Lee Westwood was tied for the lead in the first round of the PGA Championship - but that was not nearly as big a surprise as who he was tied with.

John Daly, who is only in the field due to a lifetime exemption given to past champions, had a share of the lead at three under par with two holes to play at steamy Southern Hills.

Westwood, who has never finished better than 16th in 10 previous trips to the PGA Championship, started his round on 10 and had back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14.

The Worksop player added a birdie at the fourth coming in before dropping a shot with a bogey at six.

A birdie at seven got Westwood right back on track and put him at three under.

Daly, a surprise winner at Crooked Stick in 1991, carded three birdies on the front nine And added another at 13.

A wayward drive into the trees at one led to his first bogey of the day and dropped him into a tie with Westwood.

American Arron Oberholser held the clubhouse lead at two under 68.

He had the lead for much of his round but a double-bogey at 16 dropped him into a tie for third with Hartlepool's Graeme Storm, who birdied his first two holes.

Mark Wilson, Camilo Villegas, Geoff Ogilvy and Markus Brier each shot one under 69, while Tiger Woods was three under through eight but struggled coming in and finished with a one over 71.
