Wheater set for new deal

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is determined to tie defender David Wheater to a new contract.

The 20-year-old has impressed for Boro this season, starting 19 of their 23 Premier League games this season so far and scoring three goals, with a further strike in the FA Cup. Wheater is out of contract in the summer and with a new deal still not signed, Southgate is keen to act.

"I'm confident he will be signing a new contract and pretty soon too," Southgate told the Evening Gazette.

He added: "He's a Teesside boy and loves playing for the club. We give young players a chance more than other clubs do."
