White vindicated by Tri-Nations gamble

South Africa coach Jake White believes his decision to take a second-string squad to Australia and New Zealand for this year's Tri-Nations has been fully vindicated.

White was criticised, especially by the Wallabies, for leaving his star names at home for the two away games Down Under - but virtually a full-strength squad will head to France for the World Cup.

"I've got 30 players who are ready to start work on Friday and I've only lost Pierre Spies through a bit of a freak illness, so I'm 200% happy with what has been happening over the last four years," said White.

"To get 29 of the original 30 who were selected on the aeroplane next Monday is first class. Even John Smit could have played (against Scotland) if he had really needed to. I'm fully confident he will be part of the set-up against Samoa.

"Victor Matfield (vice-captain) summed it up when he said the more we play together, and assuming the upward curve continues, by the time we get to the quarter-finals and hopefully semi-finals everything will be in place.

"These boys have been waiting for four years for next Friday. They get a few days at home with their families and then they are just waiting to see the Champs Elysees!"
