Wilko one of the greats - Bates

Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates paid a glowing tribute to Jonny Wilkinson after the England fly-half's big-money switch to Toulon was confirmed on Monday night.

Wilkinson's 12-year association with the Falcons has come to an end after he chose to rekindle his injury-plagued career with the ambitious southern French club.

"Jonny will undoubtedly go down as one of Newcastle's all-time greats," Bates said.

He added: "He has contributed an incredible amount to this club over the past 12 seasons, and been an inspirational figurehead for rugby in the north-east.

"Even during the times when his appearances for us were restricted, he has always remained a positive presence behind the scenes.

"Everyone here thanks him for his fantastic service, as well as wishing him all the best for his new life over in France."

Wilkinson has not played since dislocating a kneecap at Gloucester last September. That latest setback merely continued a catalogue of fitness troubles that restricted him to less than 50 Newcastle starts since he kicked England to World Cup glory almost six years ago.

The tale of woe includes knee ligament injuries, shoulder trouble, damaged ribs and even a blow to his kidney, but Wilkinson has never given up.

He will hope a move to the French Riviera, on a two-year deal worth a reported £1.4 million, can kickstart his career while Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal is counting on a surge in the sale of season tickets and replica shirts on the back of Wilkinson's arrival.

His Toulon debut should come on the weekend of August 15/16 when next season's Top 14 campaign kicks off.
