Williams claims writers' prize

Shane Williams has capped a record-breaking year by winning the prestigious Rugby Union Writers' Club Pat Marshall Memorial Award as the outstanding personality for 2008.

The RUWC honour comes less than a fortnight after the dazzling Welsh winger was named the International Rugby Board's world player of the year.

Williams, 31, was also named player of the RBS 6 Nations after scoring six tries in Wales' triumphant Grand Slam campaign, during which he broke Gareth Thomas' national try-scoring record.

Williams finished a remarkable calendar year with nine tries in 10 Tests, and his record total for Wales now stands at 44 in 61 internationals.

Thomas was the last Welsh winner of the Pat Marshall Award in 2005, and Williams follows in the twinkle-toe footsteps of last year's recipient Jason Robinson.

Previous winners include Jonny Wilkinson, Martin Johnson, Lawrence Dallaglio and Jonah Lomu.

Williams will receive the award at the RUWC annual dinner in London on January 5.
