Williams cruises through

Venus Williams cleared the first hurdle at the Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Zi Yan.

The eighth-seeded American needed just 74 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 7-5 success against her Chinese opponent.

Williams will face Frenchwoman Camille Pin in the second round.

Earlier in the day, second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova sounded a warning to her rivals by defeating France's Nathalie Dechy in straight sets.

The 22-year-old looked untroubled as she inflicted a 6-3 6-1 defeat on Dechy in a little over an hour.

Kuznetsova joined fellow seeds Anna Chekvetadze, Daniela Hantuchova, Alona Bondarenko, Maria Kirilenko and Sania Mirza in the last 64.

Hantuchova (nine) made light work of her opening-round match, defeating American Vania King 6-3 7-5, while Chakvetadze (six) progressed after her opponent, Andrea Petkovic, was forced out through injury.

Kirilenko (27) overcame Meilen Tu 6-4 4-6 6-3, Mirza (31) beat Iroda Tulyaganova 6-4 6-2, Bondarenko (21) defeated Alla Kudryavtseva 6-4 7-6 and Radwanska (28) dropped just one game against Olga Savchuk.

But Hungarian Agnes Szavay (20) departed after a three-set defeat by Ekaterina Makorova.
