Williams slams 'cheat' Martinez Sanchez

Second seed Serena Williams accused opponent Jose Maria Martinez Sanchez of "cheating" after defeating the Spaniard to claim a place in the fourth round of the French Open.

Williams posted a 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory on Suzanne Lenglen court but she was left incensed by an incident that occurred in the fifth game of the first set.

An angry Williams said: "The ball hit her body and therefore she should have lost the point, instead of cheating."

The American fired in a powerful shot that appeared to graze Martinez Sanchez's hand as she looked to defend herself. The ball went out but the point was awarded to Martinez Sanchez, much to the chagrin of Williams, who complained to the umpire.

The umpire insisted he could not reverse the decision if the Spaniard claimed she did not touch the ball. She went on to grab a break that game, which helped her clinch the set.

Williams added: "I hit the ball rather hard. She knew that ball hit her. It was clearly my point. I would never do that. I've never sunk (so) low. I've always been a really clean player and a good player, and it doesn't take that to win."

Earlier, fourth seed Elena Dementieva admitted she had not been ready physically to challenge for the title after being bundled out at the third-round stage by Australia's Samantha Stosur. "I just feel I'm far away from being in the right shape. I don't feel I could perform any better," Dementieva said.

"If I can keep playing the way I have been, anything is possible," said Stosur, who will next play France's Virginie Razzano.

Dementieva's compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova had no such problems on Suzanne Lenglen court. The seventh seed demolished Hungarian Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3 and has only dropped 11 games all tournament.

Kuznetsova next plays 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, the Pole who beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4. Fifth seed Jelena Jankovic picked up her third successive convincing win this tournament by thrashing Australia's Jarmila Groth 6-1 6-1.
