Windies battle on

Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo offered some belated West Indies resistance in a seemingly futile cause as they frustrated South Africa in the third Test in Durban on Saturday.

The Proteas were wicketless in the afternoon session as Samuels (81 not out) and Bravo (72no) guided the tourists to 230 for three at tea with seven second-innings wickets remaining.

The Windies still need 187 runs to avoid an innings defeat, but the session was a vast improvement on the morning when it seemed they were tamely surrendering.

Resuming on 23 without loss, they added just another 10 runs before Dale Steyn struck, removing Brenton Parchment, who faces a close-of-play hearing after being charged following an earlier incident between the pair.

Parchment (20) was adjudged lbw and Daren Ganga soon followed, when he was caught by Jacques Kallis at second slip for 11 off the bowling of Ntini.

Runako Morton produced a run-a-ball 37 before he was trapped in front not playing a stroke by Pollock, in what could prove the 34-year-old's last day of Test cricket after he announced his impending retirement on Friday.

Bravo continued where Morton left off, reaching 32 off 41 balls by the interval, with Samuels beside him on 28.

And they were relatively untroubled throughout the afternoon as they each reached 50 and moved their partnership onto 142.

Bravo in particular looked in fine form with a lofted straight drive over Pollock's head and a back-foot punch off Steyn the highlights.

Samuels offered a chance to Kallis off the bowling of Steyn when he was on 41, but the all-rounder failed to cling on. The three-match series is tied at 1-1.
