Windies have glimmer of hope

Sri Lanka require nine West Indies wickets to seal victory in the first Test in Georgetown.

The Windies were 96 for one at stumps on day four at the Providence Stadium in their pursuit of what would be a world record victory target of 437.

They have all day on Wednesday to make the 341 runs required to win but it would be some achievement on a fifth-day wicket.

The hosts' second innings got off to a shaky start when Devon Smith was sent back to the pavilion in the fifth over after a brilliant catch by Thilan Thushara off the bowling of Chaminda Vaas.

West Indies also began the day in bat, needing eight runs to avoid the follow-on.

They just about managed it, adding 11 to their overnight total before losing their final wicket when Daren Powell (12) got an outside edge to a Thushara delivery and was snapped up by Mahela Jayawardene at second slip.

In between, Sri Lanka made 240 before declaring with seven wickets down.
