Windies keep Black Caps in check

Ross Taylor hit 63 off 50 balls as New Zealand set the West Indies a target of 156 to win the first Twenty20 International in Auckland.

The tourists removed dangermen Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder early on and stemmed the run flow with wickets at regular intervals as New Zealand made 155 for seven.

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, took two for 16 and will lead the run chase under the floodlights at Eden Park.

Lionel Baker responded from being hit for successive fours by McCullum (14) by removing the wicketkeeper-batsman, who went for a big shot only to sky the ball to Sulieman Benn at mid-off in the third over.

McCullum's opening partner Ryder (12) followed with the first ball of the sixth over, when Fidel Edwards picked up a wicket with his first delivery by hitting the off stump.

Scott Styris powered to 21 off 12 balls with some swashbuckling strokes before he perished, his top edge returning the ball to bowler Kieron Pollard to take the catch.

Jacob Oram bludgeoned some powerful strokes but fell for 13 off 14 balls when Xavier Marshall took a good catch to give Benn his first wicket.

The tourists then took a second wicket in two overs when Gayle took a stunning reflex catch to claim a caught and bowled attempt to dismiss James Franklin (2).

Ross Taylor stood firm as his partners tumbled before bringing up his half century with a huge six in the 18th over. However, Ross Taylor was out in the following over when Jerome Taylor's delivery ripped out the off stump.

Daniel Flynn followed with the first ball of the final over, becoming Gayle's second victim as the West Indies sought to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
