Windies make early inroads
04 January 2007
A superb hundred from Shivnarine Chanderpaul had been the highlight of the Windies' 278 for five from their 50 overs after being put into bat by Paul Collingwood.
Then the tourists opening attack of Ravi Rampaul and Daren Powell reduced England to 85 for three after 18 overs.
Powell was the first to strike when Alastair Cook, after making 19 off 23 deliveries, miscued a drive to Fidel Edwards at mid-off.
New batsman Ian Bell made only two on his home ground before the Warwickshire batsman was trapped lbw by Rampaul, although television replays suggested the ball may have been going over the stumps.
Matthew Prior looked in good form, hoisting Powell for six over long-on, and he brought the 50 up in the 11th over with a cover drive for four off Rampaul. But the West Indians were jubilant when Pietersen on nine tried to work the ball on the leg side and was bowled by Rampaul.
Chanderpaul had fully justified the decision to promote him from number five to three in the batting order.
He was moved up after being stranded on 53 not out in the first one-day meeting at Lord's on Sunday and responded with a perfectly-paced innings after the tourists had been put into bat in overcast conditions.
Chanderpaul's partnership of 175 in 33 overs with Marlon Samuels - a record on the ground for the third wicket in limited-overs internationals - was the bedrock of the Windies total.
Chanderpaul needed 85 balls to reach 50 but he raced to his seventh ODI ton off only another 29 deliveries and his unbeaten 116 contained three sixes and 10 fours.
