Windies' middle-order digs in

Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul shared a unbeaten 83-run partnership to help the West Indies consolidate their position at tea on the first day of the second Test.

Samuels (37 not out) and Chanderpaul (34 not out) added just 76 runs on a slow pitch at Newlands in the second session to reach 160 for three, with batting which was characterised by substance rather than style.

However, Chanderpaul did finish the session with a typical Caribbean flourish after he hit South Africa spinner Paul Harris for consecutive boundaries in the the final over before the break.

Earlier, captain Chris Gayle fell four runs short of a half-century as South Africa's bowlers enjoyed the better of the first session.

Gayle, who won the toss and opted to make first use of the pitch, made 46 from 49 balls before a soft dismissal to Andre Nel in the 21st over as West Indies reached 83 for three at lunch.

Opener Daren Ganga (three) and Runako Morton (23) were the other two wickets to fall to strike bowler Dale Steyn and all-rounder Jacques Kallis respectively.
