Winter calls it a day

Newcastle flanker Russell Winter is to leave the Guinness Premiership club at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old South African said: "I'd like to think I can continue but my body is telling me I can't. If I'm totally honest with myself I think it's time to call it a day.

Former South Africa A captain Winter, who made his 50th appearance for the Falcons last weekend, said he had enjoyed his time at the club and thanked the fans for their support.

He added: "If there's one regret I have it is that I didn't come to Newcastle earlier in my career, because I've felt as if I had a really close friendship with the people here in the north-east.

"To have worn the Newcastle jersey and to have represented this area along with some of the great names of world rugby has been a real privilege, and I will take so many special memories away with me."
