Wise braced for daunting task

Leeds manager Dennis Wise admits his side face a "massive challenge" to salvage anything from the forthcoming Coca-Cola League One season.

United must begin the new campaign at Tranmere next weekend with a 15-point deficit on their rivals after the Football League opted to impose a penalty for their breach of the governing body's insolvency rules.

Speaking after Saturday's 2-1 friendly defeat to Premier League side Wigan, Wise told the club's official website: "We've got to get on with it. I just said we need 105 points to win the league and if you perform like that you have a chance. It's a massive challenge and there's the fact that we couldn't sign anyone and are two months behind everyone else. It's been difficult."

The former Chelsea star added: "It's something that's been put in front of us and we have to deal with it. Hopefully, something will change and it won't be 15 points, but minus 15 is minus 15 and it's not a nice situation to be in.

"This is what's happening, it's a blow, but we'll get on with it."

Wise added: "Full credit to the players and the group I've got. They've worked for two months, hard graft, with no money, because they want to be here and want to achieve something."
