Woodgate edging nearer Spurs switch

Boro manager Gareth Southgate confirmed this weekend the club had accepted bids from Spurs and Newcastle for the 28-year-old, but Kevin Keegan was "almost certain" the centre-back would not be his first signing after returning to St James' Park.
Juande Ramos, Spurs' head coach, is aware of Woodgate from La Liga after the defender's spell at Real Madrid and he is also looking for cover for Ledley King, who is being brought back gradually from knee surgery.
King suffers from inflammation to his knee after games and he was not risked for Sunday's defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford, where Spurs ended up with no centre-backs on the pitch after Michael Dawson's dismissal at Old Trafford.
Ramos would not comment on Woodgate's expected arrival and the club have not confirmed suggestions he has passed a medical and has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal at White Hart Lane.
Chris Gunter is the only arrival at Spurs so far in the January transfer window, although the signing of left-back Gilberto from Hertha Berlin is awaiting confirmation.
"He (Gilberto) would strengthen the team a lot," said Kevin-Prince Boateng, the Spurs midfielder who played with Gilberto in Germany.
Spurs officials also looked at a deal for Juventus midfielder Tiago last week but no deal has been completed.
