Woods happy with opening round

A mixture of magic and mediocrity kept Tiger Woods right in the hunt for a third straight Open Championship at a cold and wet Carnoustie.

Woods eagled the sixth and holed a monster putt for birdie on the 248-yard par three 16th and also carded three bogeys on his way to an opening 69, two under par.

Asked how he summed up his round, Woods said: "Successful. The back nine is really tough, you have to just suck it up and hit some good shots coming in."

He added: "To play the last three holes one under par, I will take that any day. (On 16) I was just trying to get it up there anywhere close to have an easy second putt and lo and behold it falls in."

Woods' record in the last four majors reads 1-1-2-2 and he began the week as a clear favourite to claim his 13th major title, edging closer to Jack Nicklaus' record of 18.

He birdied the third with a well-judged approach to six feet while playing partners Justin Rose and 1999 champion Paul Lawrie span their second shots back into the burn in front of the green. Woods then eagled the sixth after a superb long iron to 14 feet.

His first bogey of the day came when he found a greenside bunker on the eighth, but he bounced straight back to birdie the ninth to be out in 33.

Back to back bogeys on 12 and 13 - after a dreadful chip and more bunker trouble respectively - halted his progress but he then holed from an estimated 90ft on the 16th for a stunning birdie.
