Woods makes smooth start

Tiger Woods looked in fine form in the early stages of the USPGA Championship at Sothern Hills.

Woods started his round with a birdie at the 10th and added another at the par five 13th.

The world number one had a birdie putt on each of his first four holes and has been striking the ball crisply early on.

But Woods was far from the only player off to a fast start as the temperatures were not the only thing that is hot at Southern Hills.

Eager to put the disappointment of Carnoustie behind him, Sergio Garcia was tied for the lead after seven holes at three under.

The Spaniard, second to Woods in this event in 1999, carded three straight birdies starting on the 11th.

Marcus Brier made the turn at three under 32 while Colin Montgomerie and former PGA Championship winner Rich Beem were also at three under early in their rounds.

Montgomerie has missed the cut in all three majors this season but was in fine form early today.

He started with a pair of pars on 10 and 11 before reeling off three straight birdies of his own to grab a share of the early lead.

Beem, who outlasted Woods by one stroke at Hazeltine in 2002, was playing with Woods and had birdies at 10, 12 and 13.
