The investigation into the murder of the Englishman last month following Pakistan's World Cup exit is ongoing, with an inquest originally scheduled to start on Monday postponed indefinitely last week due to "significant developments" in the case. However, the 58-year-old's body is likely to be returned to his family in South Africa soon.
A Jamaican police spokesman said: "I can confirm Bob Woolmer's body has been released. A statement was put out by the National Security Ministry to that effect."
Woolmer was found dead in his Jamaican hotel room on March 18, the day after Pakistan had been eliminated from the World Cup, and a post-mortem indicated he had been strangled.
A coroner's inquest had been set to take place on Monday in Kingston but was put back indefinitely following a statement from the Jamaican government.
The statement did not give details of the developments but came just days after police revealed they had received results of toxicology tests on the body.
"The coroner has been advised there are recent and significant developments," the Jamaican justice ministry said.
"These new developments are critical to the progress and the eventual result of the investigation."
