In a move that could spell the end of the injury-prone 30-year-old's career, Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes said the player was free to talk to other counties.

Jones has been ruled out for the current county season after undergoing knee surgery in April, a recurring complaint that has prevented him from playing for England since the Ashes in 2005.

"This has been a difficult decision but is in the best interests of the club going forward," Rhodes said.

"We all admire the effort that Simon has put in to regain full fitness and we know he is determined to be fit for the 2010 season.

"However we are not in the position to offer him a new contract going forward so he is free to talk to any other county about his future."
