World cricket stunned by Lahore attack

The international cricket community has reacted with shock to the news of the attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore.

Vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara was one of five players to be injured when gunmen opened fire as the team bus made its way to the Gaddafi Stadium ahead of the third day of the second Test, with five policemen killed in the ensuing battle.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said "Australian cricket has many friends in Sri Lanka and in Pakistan and we sincerely hope they are all safe after this awful incident", while his Cricket South Africa counterpart, Gerald Majola, added: "Our thoughts are with all victims of this terrible attack as the cricket world come to grips with this shocking news."

Pakistan chief selector Abdul Qadir commented: "As a former cricketer I can only say this is the worst incident to have happened to the game. We are all shocked and disturbed by this.

"It was a great gesture of friendship from Sri Lanka to have come to Pakistan for this series.

"This is a terrible incident and we will have to wait and see what impact it could have on the future of cricket in the country.

"Obviously, this presents a very poor image of the country.

"The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board will decide just how we go forward from here. We can only keep our fingers crossed."

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board read: "The ECB is shocked and saddened by the senseless attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers and match officials by terrorists in Lahore.

"Our thoughts are with the families of those who have been killed or injured in this despicable attack."
