World record for Tancock
03 January 2008
The triple world bronze medallist touched in 24.47 seconds at the Olympic trials in Sheffield.
It eclipsed the mark of 24.80secs set by German Thomas Rupprath in July 2003.
Tancock said: "I feel chuffed to bits, very impressed. I don't know who will feel more chuffed - me, my family or my friends.
"It probably won't sink in for a while. I felt good, smooth and on top of the water."
He admitted he had been planning the record bid for some time, adding: "It was a good few weeks ago (when I decided).
"I just felt I had a good time in me. I was feeling fast in training so thought why not?"
Earlier, Hannah Miley was stunned after destroying her own British record in the 200 individual medley at the Olympic trials in Sheffield.
The 18-year-old knocked almost three seconds off her personal best as she won in two minutes 11.46 to rise from 60th to ninth on the all-time list.
Keri-Anne Payne in second also dipped under the old national mark as she touched in two mins 11.46secs.
