Worthington delighted after win

Nigel Worthington believes Northern Ireland can continue to grow in the remaining five games of their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

In his first match in charge he saw his team claim second spot behind Sweden in Group F by beating Liechtenstein 3-1 at Windsor Park. Two goals from prolific scorer David Healy and one from Kyle Lafferty were enough to gave Worthington the victory he craved.

The former Norwich boss said: "The result was paramount and we got it. The performance was okay after the summer recess. There will be more to come. Getting into second spot was the boost we needed and we now look forward to the next game."

That will be against Latvia next month followed quickly by Iceland, and both nations are struggling.

But Worthington appreciates there is much work to do.

"We just have to chalk these games off one by one and not look too far ahead," he said.

"Perhaps some of the other teams in the group will take points off each other and that will help us."

Healy made it 11 goals in seven games in the qualifying campaign and 31 overall for the province - a remarkable tally.

Worthington said: "Let us hope David's scoring record goes on for a long time...at least in the remaining qualifying games.

"That is one down as far as I am concerned with another five to go and I am pleased to get off the mark."
