England captain Rob Key declared when Wright was out for 105 from 96 balls, setting the hosts an unlikely 457 for victory at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.
The tourists need nine wickets on Tuesday to complete a 1-0 win after Mark Davies added to his four first-innings victims by removing opener Jamie How for the second time in the match, lbw for eight.
Aaron Redmond (27 not out) and Daniel Flynn (28no) dug in to reach 72 for one from 18 overs at the close.
While 385 more runs would bring victory, New Zealand A will realistically be playing for survival.
England resumed on 56 without loss, a lead of 159, but lost openers Key (38) and Stephen Moore (41). Samit Patel and Joe Denly went cheaply but Jonathan Trott's 51 helped the tourists to 165 for five.
From there Wright took over with 11 fours and a six as he added 123 with wicketkeeper Ben Scott (47). Liam Plunkett also chipped in with 22 down the order.
James Franklin picked up three wickets for a New Zealand A team containing several players likely to feature in the Test series against India, starting later this month.
