The 36-year-old, who agreed a new one-year contract with the Black Cats earlier this month, is among six players added to the Soca Warriors squad for next month's qualifying match with Cuba.
The former national team captain requested a meeting with Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation and FIFA vice president Jack Warner on Monday, where he made himself available as the Soca Warriors seek to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
"I had a meeting with Dwight on Monday at his request," Warner said.
"Dwight offered to play for the national team. The coach (Francisco Maturana) was happy to hear about Dwight's availability."
