The 60-year-old was placed in temporary charge of the Latics in March following the departure of John Sheridan, but will take control of his last match at Walsall on Saturday.

Oldham chief executive Alan Hardy said: "When Joe kindly agreed to help us out six weeks ago it was always with just the last nine games of the season in mind, and at that stage a longer arrangement was never considered. After openly discussing the situation with the owners and myself, Joe felt that the best option for the club to take was to look for a younger man to take the helm."

He added: "However, Joe has agreed to continue to help but without the day-to-day involvement. This arrangement suits both parties at the present time."

Royle, who spent 12 years as manager of the Latics from 1982-94, has failed to win any of the eight games he has been in charge for this time around.
