HSBC loses information on customers

07.04.08

HSBC has become the latest financial institution to admit mislaying private information on customers through the loss of a computer disc.

The High Street bank has finally admitted that a disc containing details of 370,000 customers went missing four weeks ago in transit from an office in Southampton.

HSBC could face an investigation and fines by the Financial Services Authority as the City watchdog has taken a dim view of such security lapses in the past.

Details on the disc include customers' names, birth dates and levels of insurance, although not information about bank accounts.
