Google grilling on human rights

Online search giant Google will face tough questions on censorship and human rights at its annual general meeting tonight, with two motions attempting to force the company to live up to its Do No Evil motto.

The first motion, proposed by the New York City Comptroller and sponsored by Amnesty International, calls on the firm to "use all legal means to resist censorship".

It also demands Google make it clear when it has bowed to government pressure to release user information.

The second, by Californian fund manager Harrington Investments, calls for the board of directors to form a human rights committee.

Most of the criticism relates to Google's Chinese-language service Google.cn, launched in April 2006.

The company argued that it was better to agree to China's censorship rules than to refuse to serve Chinese customers.

But Beijing is investigating Google and other websites for allegedly breaching state secrecy laws and showing "illegal" maps of the country.
