Journal staff move from Wall Street to midtown

23.05.08

The Wall Street Journal will soon be a "midtown journal", as Rupert Murdoch plans to move the lofty paper from the financial district to join his tabloid New York Post on Sixth Avenue.

The plan outlined today was expected to alarm veteran staff at the Journal who argued against the News Corp takeover as a threat to the paper's independence and have been resistant to change. These scholarly journalists will now file into work in the morning alongside reporters and editors famed for such racy sex and crime-strewn front pages as the famous "Headless Body in Topless Bar".

The shift, planned for next February, is the latest in a host of changes Murdoch has introduced since taking over parent company Dow Jones six months ago.

Dow Jones Newswires, which Murdoch also acquired through the WSJ takeover, will also move from its current base in New Jersey to Murdoch's hub at 1211, Sixth Avenue. The Journal will move from its current home at 1 World Financial Center in lower Manhattan, just near Wall Street.
