Arun Sarin, who stands down as chief executive of Vodafone next month, was awarded pay, bonus, shares and options worth a total of £15.6 million for his final year in charge.

He received £1.31 million in pay and a £2.13 million bonus, raising his total package from £3.25 million to £3.6 million in the year to the end of March, during which Vodafone's earnings rose 10% to £13.2 billion.

He was also awarded free shares and share options which, based on today's share price, could be worth up to £12 million when he leaves as adviser to the company in March 2009.

His deputy, Vittorio Colao, who takes over as chief executive, was paid £2.96 million last year.
