InBev facing a big fight for Bud

12.06.08

Stella Artois maker InBev will have to overcome stiff political opposition if it is to secure its £23 billion takeover of Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch.

The Bud company employs 6000 in its home town of St Louis, Missouri, where the state governor has already voiced his concern.

Matthew Blunt called the bid "deeply troubling" and said he was "deeply opposed" to a deal.

InBev formally launched its offer last night, weeks after the move was first reported. Anheuser-Busch said it would "evaluate the proposal in the context of all relevant factors".

It has been looking to cut costs, particularly in the US, for several years. InBev has a record of cost-cutting at companies it acquires.

It is raising $40 billion (£20 billion) from banks to fund the offer.

The takeover of such an iconic American brand by a Dutch company will also raise hackles. Analysts say this could be a threat to sales in the US.
