PZ Cussons says it may still have an appetite for acquisitions despite this year's purchase of Covent Garden spa and beauty products business, the Sanctuary, for £75 million.

The soap and home goods firm, announcing higher-than-expected full-year results, said the Sanctuary buy had left it with a small net debt position of £32 million, and its balance sheet was strong enough to consider other investments.

The Sanctuary spa was given global fame in 1978 when Joan Collins appeared in a scene on the spa's swing in The Stud, a film based on the novel by her sister Jackie Collins, just after it had opened.

It remained popular with stars such as Kate Moss and Sadie Frost in the 1990s but has in recent years faced competition from new entrants.

Cussons, best-known for its Imperial leather and Carex soap brands, said the spa had contributed £1 million to operating profit and £5.3 million to revenue in its four months contribution. Overall, the firm reported a 12% rise in pre-tax profit for the year to May to £76.5 million.

Chairman Anthony Green said trading had been strong across all its regions, particularly in Nigeria which now accounts for about a third of profits. The company plans to open more day spas in Britain and overseas.
