iPhone: Apple says it has sold applications worth $1 million a day

Jobs hails $30m iPhone bonanza

11.08.08

Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs says that iPhone users have downloaded more than
60 million programs for the device since it opened up the market for software.

Apple sold applications worth an average of $1 million (£520,000) a day for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month, Jobs said.
Apple is retaining 30% of the proceeds from application sales while the programs' creators keep 70%, Jobs told the Wall Street Journal.

While Apple's direct profit from the sales will be small, Jobs hopes the demand for software will drive sales of the iPhone.

Jobs is also keen to advertise the success of software sales as the company suffers severe teething problems with its launch of the online synchronisation service MobileMe.

These have left many customers without email services.

Jobs declined to give an updated sales tally for the iPhone 3G, introduced last month at half the price of the previous model.
