BP's pipeline in Georgia is back in action

14.08.08

BP today restarted pumping gas through its Georgia pipeline as worries about its security during the Russian conflict eased.

However, its oil pipeline to the Black Sea port of Supsa stayed closed.

The gas pipeline pumps from fields in Azerbaijan and into Turkey west of the Georgian capital of Tbilisi and has been deemed safe by the British oil giant.

However, the Baku-Supsa pipeline remains closed amid concerns about reported Russian attacks on the port of Poti, just 15 kilometres north of Supsa.

Even before the Russian attacks on Georgia, BP's production from the Caspian Sea region had been hampered by a fire last week that caused the shutdown of the key Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline that also goes through Georgia. Repairs have begun but it is unclear how long they will take.

The price of oil edged up 35 cents a barrel to $113.82 in London.
