Yet more delays for Boeing Dreamliner

05.12.08

Boeing is facing further delays in the launch of its 787 Dreamliner in the wake of a bruising strike and problems with parts for the aircraft.

The plane manufacturer has already delayed the project three times.

Boeing is now considering postponing first deliveries of the new plane by at least another six months. A decision is expected to be announced later this month.

The Dreamliner is crucial for Boeing's strategy in taking on arch- rival Airbus, the European manufacturer.

The plane was originally due to reach customers in May. However, analysts pointed out that few airlines are in the mood to buy new planes.

"We are currently conducting an assessment of the 787 programme schedule," said Yvonne Leach, a spokeswoman for Boeing.

Boeing has already said all its programmes will face at least a day-for-day delay from the eight-week machinists strike that ended last month.

That strike stopped the 787's first test flight this quarter.

The Dreamliner has also been hit by parts shortages, unfinished work by suppliers, a redesign and fasteners that weren't installed correctly.
