Nintendo Wii at the top of it's game

09.12.08

The one bright spot in consumer electronics this Christmas looks set to be the hugely popular Wii games console.

Maker Nintendo today said demand for the game, which has outsold the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 almost every month since its release in November 2006, was higher than the company had expected, despite the credit crunch.

Sales last week - the first crucial period in the US shopping calendar - had been particularly strong, said Nintendo president Satoro Iwata. "I see no negative signs so far," he said.

The Wii, with its distinctive handsets that can be waved around as tennis rackets, steering wheels or golf clubs, have outsold their more sophisticated rivals.
