Online search company Yahoo is close to naming a new chief executive, insiders say.

While software company executive Carol Bartz is a candidate, it is unclear if she is the frontrunner after ex-Vodafone chief Arun Sarin withdrew from the race.

Bartz is the former chief executive of Autodesk, a company that builds design software used in engineering. She is “on the list”, according to reports, and is said to have impressed Yahoo executives. But no one is ruling out president Susan Decker, a former investment banker.

Sarin, whom Yahoo's board had seriously considered, is understood to have decided not to seek the job. Bartz, 60, is still Autodesk's chairwoman and sits on the boards of Cisco Systems and Intel.

No announcement is expected before next week. Yahoo's new chief must rebuild confidence in a firm that lags rival Google.

Yahoo founder Jerry Yang is quitting as chief after angering some shareholders by rejecting a $44.6 billion (£29.39 billion) Microsoft bid.
