First LNG tanker unloads at UK's Teesside

14.04.09

The Excelerate liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker was pumping fuel into Britain's Teesside import facility today after arriving yesterday, according to the local port authority.

The tanker is the first to deliver to the terminal since U.S.-based Excelerate Energy commissioned it in early 2007.

Texas-based Excelerate, which is 50 percent owned by German utility RWE, can feed gas directly from its specially designed tankers into the gas grid.

Gas also started flowing into the British gas network for the first time from the new LNG import at South Hook, Wales, over the long Easter weekend, according to data from National Grid.

The terminal is still being commissioned but was pumping gas into the network at a rate of over 6 million cubic metres a day on Tuesday, the data showed.

The Arctic Discoverer LNG tanker also arrived at the Isle of Grain import terminal in Kent on Friday, terminal operator National Grid said on Tuesday.

The tankerload of Norwegian LNG was bought by Britain's Centrica which owns import rights at the facility near London.
