North London Line given £90m upgrade
20.04.09
The North London Line, the overground railway that runs in a sweeping arc from Richmond through north-west London to Stratford in the east, is to get a £90 million upgrade ahead of the Olympics in 2012.
The contract covering the design and construction, track and overhead powerlines areas of the work has been awarded to Carillion, a leading support services company in the Public Private Partnership sector.
This is the biggest project ever commissioned by Network Rail for the North London Line and will include a connection to the new East London Line, which is designed to serve the Olympic site in Greenwich. The line will connect to the East London Line at Highbury & Islington.
Carillion also recently won the £80 million project to maintain the East London Line for the next seven years. A total of £1.4 billion is being spent on upgrading London's Overground.

The North London and Barking to Gospel Oak lines have always been cinderella routes, although they have the capacity to keep large numbers of passengers from adding to central London congestion, if properly run. user groups have been campaigning for improvements for years, and had to fight every inch for the most basic, commonsense amenities, such as display boards and public announcements. Lifts? Station staff? You must be joking. How typical that government only cares about the Olympics, not the people of London.
