‘Name and shame’ plan under attack

Evening Standard
23.04.09

The Government was today accused of breaching taxpayer confidentiality after it announced a new clampdown on tax avoidance.

HM Revenue & Customs plans to publish the names and addresses of anyone who deliberately understates tax returns by £25,000 or more.

Firms that do not pay full tax could also be named and shamed under the scheme announced in the Budget.

The Chancellor hopes it will raise £1 billion in the next three years Simon Wilks, tax partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: “This is a new departure for HMRC, and the question of taxpayer confidentiality is a cornerstone of the UK tax system.”
