Locations get star role in Pinewood’s £200m plan

1 Jun 2009

Fancy a canalside flat in Venice or a classic brownstone apartment in the Bronx at affordable prices and just 20 miles away from central London?

Pinewood Studios today submitted planning application to build one of the biggest selections of ready-made locations in the world.

The £200 million Project Pinewood, first announced two years ago, will include both Venetian and Amsterdam canals, a Tudor market place, a Parisian square and pre-war Berlin.

But uniquely, its plans include 1400 new homes built behind the film facades. The studio said homes would be let and sold primarily to creative types working in the film industry.

The aim is to attract film-makers back from cheaper locations in eastern Europe by offering all the major movie locations close to the technical facilities for which the British film industry is renowned.

The final decision on the 40-hectare project, to be built between the junctions of the M25 and the M40, will probably rest with the Secretary of State for Communities, currently Hazel Blears.
