Universal fretting about Bruno's wet weekend

13.07.09

Hollywood executives at Universal Pictures were fretting this morning as weekend box-office sales figures for Sacha Baron Cohen's movie Bruno disappointed expectations in the all-important US market.

The hoax Austrian fashionista movie pulled in strong sales of $14.4 million (£8.9 million) on its opening night on Friday. But this petered out rapidly over the following two days.

In total, it pulled in $30.4 million compared with some expectations of $40 million. The launch was fuelled by a massive publicity push including the infamous MTV Awards stunt where he landed, buttocks first, on Eminem's face.
