Eurostar is not alone in its crisis on the railways. National Express has been forced to hand back its East Coast Main Line out of King's Cross to the Government because of the collapse in first-class passenger revenue.

South West Trains, which runs Europe's busiest commuter services into and out of Waterloo, has fallen out with the Government over the level of taxpayer subsidies its parent company Stagecoach believes it should get.

Another major commuter line FirstGreatWestern has admitted it only remains profitable because of state handouts.
