Carmaker Ford today underlined the crisis facing the motor industry when it racked up second-quarter losses of $638 million (£386 million).

Losses at the company — the only major US carmaker which declined government support — were not as bad as feared.

Avoiding a rescue helped Ford to deliver a smaller sales drop in America than stricken rivals General Motors and Chrysler.
